X-Prize

22 July, 2024 5 persons team University Project (Blend Week)

We were introduced to a corporation called X-Prize, a non-profit organisation that creates and holds competitions that solves world problems. Then, we were given the task to create a pitch that will help the company be recognised by more people, targeting specifically to university students, and encourage them to participate in the competition. We were split into groups of 5-6 with equal numbers of Product Design and Visual Communication students.

Day 1

On our first day, we started off with learning what X-Prize is while analysing what the company lacks in terms of recognition and engagement. Next we brainstormed various ways on how one could be attentive to something, what drags a person into doing something, and many more evolving the topic of engagement and attraction. Then, we decided to assign roles for each other on more research about elevator anti-social behaviour, brand identity, what makes people feel empowered psychologically, how do you get people to reflect, and existing digital experiences.

The next day, we gathered our insights which then lead us to creating Crazy 8s. From the Crazy 8s, we found that our ideas have similarities, so we grouped them. Then we connect some groups together to create more interesting ideas. After that, we voted on top three ideas and made a system to picture clearly on how it would look and so that we would all have cohesive visions of our pitch to-be.

Day 2

Day 3

On our third day, we created our “Job To Be Done” that is “Help Me Feel Empowered To Innovate”. Because we saw how daunting X-Prize is to a lot of people, we want to boost people’s confidence while informing them what X-Prize is effectively, we wanted to brainstorm how we can do so. To achieve these goals, we decided to create an interactive and engaging experience when users enter a lift. First, we created a user journey map to envision how we would like the user to feel when entering the lift. Then we planned out how we are going to prototype our idea for user testing.

Day 4

The day after that, we started off by brainstorming how the lift is going to look like and what the graphics would be. We decided on designing different global issues that relates to each faculty of a university. Our first prototype on this concept was a bush fire. We drew on white boards, added the X-Prize logo and made sure it looked as close to our vision as possible. After that, we invited 5 people for our user testing. Unfortunately our concept did not reach our goals, or it wasn’t effective enough. We wanted users to feel empowered, confident, and curious in joining X-Prize, however we were only able to achieve the empowered part. The users also described our concept as too overwhelming with the motion graphics.

Although our failure brought us into a slump, it wasn’t long until I came up with an idea to scratch our lift ideas and make it simpler by using stickers on reflective surfaces. This was also included in our initial ideas from day 2. After many considerations and discussions, we decided to go with the idea and made the concept a poetic as we envisioned. We also surveyed 30 people to choose which quote makes them feel the most empowered and ended up with “Change begins with me.”

Day 5

The next day, we created our prototype and did user testings which fortunately reached our goals for this project. We received positive feedback on our approach to the project and even got some users to take selfies with the reflective surfaces we used. Next, we made a storyboard on how we were going to advertise our product. Then we planned out our slides as well as assigning roles to each of us before our presentation the following day. We also finalised our logo.

Day 6 (Finale)

Conclusion

To conclude, the project provided a worthy learning experience. My group and I were able to receive the chance to talk to the champions of X-Prize as well as the employees of X-Prize. It was a rewarding experiencing that brought us a healthy and wider networks where we got helpful insights on our projects. We were described as innovative and creative by the champions.

The champion and the class.

The group and our prototype.

Let’s stay connected!
